Two Days Later

There it was. The Harpy capital city.

After nearly two months of travel, multiple war battles, several assassination attempts, a Dungeon Crawl gone wrong, and way too much internal bickering, the allied coalition had finally arrived at their destination.

At their target.

The sight gave Rob an almost surreal sense of finality. Reaching the capital had been his main driving impetus for weeks on end. Well, his main impetus besides killing Elnaril, but he couldn't do the latter without the former. Everything the coalition had endured, all the risks they'd taken by invading Harpy territory with an undermanned army, was so that they could get to this fucking city.

While their journey wasn't quite at a close yet, today represented the opening lines of its final act. Unsurprisingly, every single person in the coalition was grappling with complicated feelings right now. Rob was no different. In truth, before today, he'd built up the capital city in his mind for so long that he'd assumed that it couldn't possibly live up to the hype.

Unfortunately, it did.

From afar, the Harpy capital looked more like a fortress than a city. The stone walls encircling it were built so high that they obscured the tallest buildings that resided within. It was a startling feat of architecture, especially considering the capital itself was three times bigger than any other Harpy city Rob had seen.

Aesthetically speaking, though...it was ugly as sin. A prime example of function over form. There wasn't even a front gate, and while the Harpies didn't strictly need one, its absence made Rob revise his impression of the capital. It didn't look like a fortress – it looked like a prison. As if keeping its enemies out was secondary to keeping its inhabitants in.

Rob couldn't imagine living in that kind of place. He'd feel claustrophobic no matter where he was. It must have been downright abysmal for the Harpies, who preferred high-rise domiciles in order to feel closer to the sky.

Based on what the coalition Leaders knew, the city wall's height and lack of a front gate were recent developments, although no one was certain of exactly how recent. Despite the grand scope of a project like that, it wasn't outside the realm of possibility that it had been started after King Elnaril began to be fully possessed by the Blight. What would've taken medieval-era humans years to build would be a much simpler undertaking for flying Utility Class users.

And at the very least, the enormous field of Mines surrounding the city outskirts was definitely new.

That little revelation answered a question Goroth had been raising for some time now. During war strategy meetings, he'd occasionally wondered when the Harpies were going to start fortifying their positions with explosives. The fact that the coalition hadn't encountered any so far gave him pause. Mines wouldn't have prevented them from seizing Harpy settlements, true, but surely some defensive precautions were better than none.

The reason for that was now apparent: Elnaril was a greedy hoarder. He'd probably shipped every last Mine in the goddamn territory straight to his home base.
